Reality of Nursing Home Care
Who Can You Trust?
Cooperating Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities
Which is the best nursing home?
Which is the best assisted living facility?
These are the questions the Citizens' Committee is most often asked.

Naturally, the answer becomes a major concern if you must place a father, mother, husband, wife, grandmother, grandfather or any loved one in the care of others.

Truthfully, the quality of care varies from facility to facility, and there are many technical factors that can determine the overall level of care that a particular facility is delivering. The reality is that some nursing homes do provide better care than others.

We believe that, except for unannounced daily inspections by qualified personnel, the following method will be a reliable guide to evaluating the quality of care provided by a particular nursing home or assisted living facility.

  1. Are they friendly and welcoming to our Humanitarian Visitors?
  2. Do they participate in our community service projects?
  3. Do they make our literature available to family members or guardians of residents who may wish to have a community volunteer supplement their visiting time?
  4. Are staff and administrators cooperative when family members request a qualified Citizens' Committee volunteer to assist in care-planning meetings?
  5. Do they permit a Citizens' Committee volunteer to tour the facility accompanied by a staff person?
  6. Are administrators and staff responsive to justified concerns for residents' welfare and do they address those concerns in a timely fashion?
  7. Is information about ownership structures freely given?
  8. Will they allow a Citizens' Committee volunteer to participate in resident/family meetings?
In our experience, the more that the owners and administrators of a facility welcome responsible and unobtrusive community interests in residents' welfare, the better the care usually given in that facility. And, the reverse is usually true. The more a facility discourages community interest in residents' welfare, the more that facility's staff may be insecure about the level of care they provide to residents.

Interviewing of nursing homes and assisted living facilities is currently in progress.

The following nursing homes and assisted living facilities have pledged full cooperation with the Citizens' Committee to Protect the Elderly based on the above areas of cooperation.  Click here for a detailed list.
