The Reality of Nursing Home Care

The reality of the entire system of nursing home care in its present state is that it does not provide the level of care necessary for the comfort and safety of elderly residents. Most people with justified complaints about substandard care receive no satisfactory resolutions. Some people can justifiably argue that certain residents do receive adequate care. Like in all things, some facilities are better managed than others.

However, the reality is that, at present, you cannot assume that your loved one will receive adequate care in any nursing home or assisted living facility.

"This year, the Health Care Financing Administration released its highly influential staffing report that concluded that 53% of nursing homes could not meet the staffing levels required to prevent harm.  This leaves 800,000 nursing home residents inadequaely protected!  The report included nearly the same direct care staffing ratio as the "Consumer Minimum Staffing Standard" as the levels needed to provide decent care.  According to the report, 93% of the nation's nursing homes cannot meet decent care levels."
